The Quick Lawn Care Checklist: How to Start the Season Right

The Quick Lawn Care Checklist: How to Start the Season Right

After a long, wet winter, many lawns across the UK come out of the colder months looking tired, patchy, and often full of moss. Cooler temperatures, heavy rainfall, compacted soil and low sunlight levels all create the perfect environment for moss to thrive while grass struggles.

Spring is the ideal time to reset your lawn and give it the care it needs to recover before the main growing season begins. With the right approach early in the year, you can improve lawn health, control moss and encourage thicker, greener grass all around your garden through spring and summer.

Clear Debris and Assess Winter Damage

Before applying any treatments, it is vital to prep your lawn with a quick clean up.

Remove:

  • Fallen leaves
  • Twigs and branches
  • Dead grass and organic debris

This allows sunlight and airflow to reach the soil and helps you see the condition of the grass underneath. You can therefore accurately find the right lawn care product specifically for your area, or contact us with a quick description and allow our team of professionals to help you directly!

Look out for:

  • Moss patches
  • Bare areas
  • Compacted soil
  • Poor drainage spots

Identifying these problems early helps you target the right treatments, without damaging your lawn further.

Apply a Moss Treatment Early in Spring

Moss thrives in the damp conditions typical of UK winters. Treating moss early in spring prevents it spreading and gives grass room to grow. It is always best to apply moss treatments to actively growing lawns, this time of year avoids very dry or frosty conditions, capturing the grass in its ideal period.

Iron-based moss treatments are widely used because they work quickly and help deepen the green colour of grass.

Many of our products, such as Ferromex Lawn Moss Killer and Ferro Top Fertiliser, are designed to target moss effectively while improving lawn colour. Once applied, moss will typically turn black within a few days, making it easy to remove later.

If you prefer a granular option, lawn sand treatments can also help control moss while providing iron to the grass.

Wait Before Raking Out Dead Moss

Once moss treatments have worked, the moss will turn dark or black as it dies. At this stage you can rake it out.

Scarifying or vigorous raking removes the dead moss and thatch layer that builds up over winter, whilst improving airflow to the soil and allowing grass to thicken up.

You may notice some bare areas after this step. Don’t worry, this is completely normal and can be addressed later in the season with overseeding if needed.

Address Long-Term Moss Causes

Treating moss is important, but long-term lawn health also depends on solving the underlying conditions that allow moss to grow.

Common causes of moss in UK lawns include:

  • Poor drainage
  • Shaded gardens
  • Compacted soil
  • Acidic soil conditions
  • Low fertility

Regular aeration, feeding and good mowing practices will help reduce moss returning in future seasons.

Starting your lawn care routine early in spring makes a big difference to lawn health for the rest of the year. By clearing debris, treating moss, improving soil conditions and feeding the grass, you can give your lawn the best chance to recover from winter and thrive through the growing season.
