Asparagus Beetle
Asparagus Beetle
The Asparagus Beetle (Crioceris asparagi) can be a very serious problem for the growers of Asparagus plants. When in both larval and adult stages, the beetle feeds on the plants, damaging both the stems and foliage.
With two generations per year, untreated areas can very quickly become infested so early identification and treatment is very important. The first generation appears on plants between May to June, with the second from August to September. After treatment, and once the growing season is finished, it is very important to keep areas tidy as adult beetles will overwinter within plant debris.

FAQs
• How to I use the nematodes?
You simply have to mix the nematodes with water, making sure there are no are no lumps which could block your sprayer or watering can. The nematodes are supplied within a powder which makes transport, storage, and usage easy and safe but you do have to ensure that this is well mixed prior to use. Once mixed the solution should be added to your preferred method of application, mixed a second time, then you are ready to apply.
Before opening the nematode pack, you should read the instructions and make sure that they are followed.
• Can I use a sprayer to apply the nematodes?
You can use a sprayer to apply the nematode solution but we do recommend removing any filters from within the sprayer hose or stop valve (spray handle) as the solution is slightly thicker than water. For the same reason, if possible, a large nozzle is preferable to a smaller one.
• When should I apply the Asparagus nematodes?
The Asparagus Beetle produces two generations per year with the first appearing on plants between May to June, and the second from August to September. It is during these times that the most effective treatments should be made.
• How do I store these nematodes?
You should aim to use the nematodes as soon as they arrive as they are alive. If this isn’t possible then the unopened pack can be safely stored in your fridge until you are ready to use them but you should use them as soon as possible.
