Carrot Root Fly

Carrot Root Fly

The Carrot Root Fly can be a severe pest to carrot crops of all sizes. Adults will emerge from April and will then lay fresh eggs which will hatch into creamy coloured larvae after about 7 days, depending on the weather.

The larvae will move through the soil and, when in contact with a carrot, start feeding on the roots then, eventually, burrowing into the carrot roots themselves. The first visible symptoms are upon the foliage which will generally start to turn a reddish colour and start to wilt. The larvae will leave continue to eat into the carrot leaving it with extensive damage and disfiguration.

The nematodes are supplied in a formulation designed to keep them in a high quality state.  They should be used as soon as possible but, unopened packs, can be stored in a fridge for up to 6 weeks.

PLEASE NOTE - As the nematodes are shipped live, they are bred in batches to be as fresh as possible when they reach you.  Your nematodes are prepared to order and despatched in approximately 5 working days.

Product Description

The Carrot Root Fly can be a severe pest to carrot crops of all sizes. Adults will emerge from April and will then lay fresh eggs which will hatch into creamy coloured larvae after about 7 days, depending on the weather.

The nematodes are supplied in a formulation designed to keep them in a high quality state.  They should be used as soon as possible but, unopened packs, can be stored in a fridge for up to 6 weeks.

The most suitable time to apply the nematodes is on a humid or wet day as they are UV-sensitive and will not survive long periods when exposed to bright, sunny conditions. We recommend applying to your crops during the early morning hours or early in the evening.

PLEASE NOTE - As the nematodes are shipped live, they are bred in batches to be as fresh as possible when they reach you.  Your nematodes are prepared to order and despatched in approximately 5 working days.

Product Specification

As the Carrot Root Fly can produce two generation per year, we recommend two treatments being made with the first during May & June and the second from August through to October. Please be aware of the temperature during the earlier weeks; ensure the possibility of frosts have passed, and that the soil temperature is over 10oC.

• Storage of Nematodes
As the nematodes are supplied live, it is important that you use them as soon as possible, ideally when they arrive, but if not possible then unopened containers can be safely stored in a fridge (at or around 4oC) until you are able to use them. Do not allow the contents to freeze. You should not store opened packets or mixed solutions.

• Required Conditions
These nematodes are designed for areas that are showing signs of infestation. The nematode solution should be applied to the infected plants and you should attempt to target the actual caterpillars if possible. The solution should not be applied during hours of bright sunshine as the nematodes are UV sensitive. We recommend applying during the early morning or evening when the UV levels are lower, the temperature will have reduced, and the humidity level will be better suited.

• Usage Instructions

o Empty contents of packet (25 million/50 square metres) into a bucket containing 2.5 litres of water and mix. Continue mixing until the solution is free of lumps. You have now made your nematode concentrate.
o Add this 2.5 litres to a further 5.5 litres of water, and continue to stir until all lumps are removed.
o This 8 litres of solution is now ready to apply to the soil around the plants.
o Use the full 8 litres, do not store the solution.

• Next Steps
The treated areas should be kept moist for two weeks following treatment to help the movement of the nematodes through the soil.
The nematodes will remain active, within the soil, for 3-4 weeks after application however, for heavy infestations, a repeat treatment may be required.

FAQs

IS IT EASY TO APPLY YOUR NEMATODES?
The nematodes are supplied as a powder so once mixed with water it is ready to use but you must ensure there aren't any lumps in the solution. As you will be applying the Carrot Root Fly Killer Nematodes at ground level you can apply with either a watering can or a sprayer depending upon the size of the area to be treated however, if using a sprayer we recommend the removal any filters from with the hose or spray gun to minimise the chance of blockages.

CAN I STORE THE NEMATODES?
As the nematodes are live then they should be used as soon as possible. It is safe store unopened packs in a fridge but please apply the treatments as soon as you are able.

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY THE CARROT ROOT FLY KILLER NEMATODES?
We recommend treatment between the months of May and June and August, September, and October

HOW DO I APPLY THE NEMATODES?
As the Carrot Root Fly Killer nematodes are applied to the soil, we recommend the use of either a sprayer or a watering can. A sprayer will allow you to monitor the spray and to target your spraying but a watering can be easier to use and can help to ensure that good soil coverage is made especially during windy conditions.

WHICH PACK SIZE SHOULD I HAVE?
Obviously you should select the pack that corresponds with the size of area that you are looking to treat however we recommend allowing a little more square meterage than you may actually have to give a little leeway when applying. You may also want to consider the possibility of a second application as if you have a heavy infestation then a repeat treatment may be required 3-4 weeks after the first.

HOW DO I GET RID OF CARROT ROOT FLY?
Once you notice the activity of the Carrot Root Fly then an application of the Carrot Root Fly Killer nematodes can be made. We recommend applying in May - June and then a second treatment between August - October as there are normally two generations of Carrot Root Fly per year. The nematodes just require mixing with water, are safe for the environment, and can be applied with a watering can or sprayer.
