Fungus Fly

Fungus Fly

The Fungus Fly (also known as Sciarid Fly, or Fungus Gnat) is a tiny, black fly that can cause extensive damage to many types of plant, including those being propagated, and house plants.  Nematodes are easy to use, and a natural form of pest control that just requires mixing with water and applying to soil where activity has been noticed.

These tiny, black flies lay their eggs in compost, or soil, from which the larvae develop. The larvae will feed on young plants, and seedlings at propagation and are a very common pest in house plants and it is here that most people notice the fly for the first time.

Damp conditions and organic plant matter will provide an ideal breeding ground for the larvae, which will feed on plant roots causing the seedling to collapse. When in large numbers the larvae can also spread soil-borne diseases such as Pythium.

Once the larvae develop into adults they become nuisance pests, forming small clouds of flies when the soil is disturbed.  The flies are are very noticeable with house plants, especially during the warmer, summer months however the flies are active all year so treatments can be made when activity is noticed.

The nematodes are supplied in a gel formulation which keeps them of high quality in storage and delivery. Suitable for storage in the fridge for up to 6 weeks if unopened.

PLEASE NOTE - As these are live creatures, they are bred in batches to ensure freshness when your order is received.  Your nematodes will be prepared to order and despatched in around 5 working days.

Product Specification

Choose a humid or wet weather to apply your Fungus Fly Killer Nematodes. Nematodes are UV-sensitive and will not survive long when exposed to bright, sunny conditions. Apply the nematodes early in the morning or early in the evening in order to utilise the optimum humidity levels. House plants should be removed from strong, direct light during treatment.

Soil or compost temperatures should be above 10℃ for the nematodes to be active, and you should ensure that treated soil is kept moist for 2 weeks following treatment.

• Storage of Nematodes
As the nematodes are supplied live, it is important that you use them as soon as possible, ideally when they arrive, but unopened containers can be safely stored in a fridge (at or around 4oC) until you are able to use them. Do not allow the contents to freeze. You should not store opened packets or mixed solutions.

• Required Conditions
These nematodes are designed for plants and surrounding areas that are showing signs fly activity. This can be either visible damage to plants or just seeing the flies on the soil, plant, or flying. The nematode solution should be applied to the soil around the infected plants. The solution should not be applied during hours of bright sunshine as the nematodes are UV sensitive. We recommend applying during the early morning or evening when the UV levels are lower, the temperature will have reduced, and the humidity level will be better suited.

• Usage Instructions

o Pack contents should be mixed with lukewarm water before application.

• Next Steps
For heavy infestations, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment process after 4 weeks.

FULL INSTRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED WITH YOUR ORDER.

FAQs

HOW DO I GET RID OF LITTLE FLIES AROUND MY INDOOR PLANTS?
The little flies are most probably the Fungus Fly and they are very active around house plants especially during the warmer summer months, although they are active all year. Sticky pads are quite good for the adults however they will not catch all of the flies, you are condemning the fly to a slow death, and they will not touch the larvae which can cause a lot of damage to plants by feeding on their roots. We recommend using our Fungus Fly Killer nematodes which is a natural form of pest control, is safe for plants, pets, children, and wildlife, and just requires mixing with water.

IS IT EASY TO APPLY YOUR NEMATODES?
The nematodes are supplied as a powder so once mixed with water it is ready to use but you must ensure there aren't any lumps in the solution. As you will be applying the Fungus Fly Killer Nematodes at ground level you can apply with either a watering can or a sprayer. If using on house plants then a watering can is a very simple option. For the treatment of large areas a sprayer is recommended but, if possible, remove any filters from within the sprayer hose, stop valve, or lance to reduce the possibility of blockages.

CAN I STORE THE NEMATODES?
Nematodes should be used as soon as possible. Unopened packets can be safely stored in a fridge, until you are able to use them, but please apply the treatments as soon as you are able.

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY THE FUNGUS FLY KILLER NEMATODES?
You should apply your Fungus Fly Killer Nematodes when damage to plants is observed or when you have seen the tiny flies being active. Fungus Fly can be active all year and can be treated at any time they occur.

HOW DO I APPLY THE NEMATODES?
As the Fungus Fly Killer nematodes is applied directly to the soil either a watering can or sprayer can be used. Large areas are most suited to a sprayer with small areas, and house plants, suiting a watering can.

WHICH PACK SIZE SHOULD I HAVE?
Obviously you should select the pack that corresponds with the size of area that you are looking to treat however we recommend allowing a little more square meterage than you may actually have to give a little leeway when applying. You may also want to consider the possibility of a second application as if you have a heavy infestation then a repeat treatment may be required four weeks after the first.
