Vine Weevil Nematodes

Vine Weevil Nematodes

Naturally, and safely control the Vine weevil with our nematodes which are safe for humans, wildlife, and plants.

Once applied these nematodes enter the larvae of the Vine weevil via a natural opening, like the mouth, then feed on the contents of the larvae. A natural bacteria is produced, inside the larvae, which kills it. Infected larvae will be completely broken down by the nematodes. The nematodes also reproduce inside the larvae, releasing more nematodes into the surrounding area.

Product Description

Our Vine Weevil Killer provides a solution by using nematodes which are living organisms that can be used to control the pests. We use the Steinernema species, which are active all year round, or the Heterorhabditis bacteriophora species which are most suited for the warmer months.

Nematodes provide a safe, natural solution for the control of the Vine weevil. The larvae are best treated between the months of January to May and August to October and indoor treatments can be made all year.

Vine weevils are certainly one of the most active garden pests within the UK and northern Europe and can cause huge amounts of damage to a wide variety of plants. Nocturnal, the adults can travel large distances and lay large amounts of eggs that, if left to mature, will develop in to the Vine weevil larvae, and it is these larvae that can cause the most damage to a wide range of plants as they feed on the root system. The adult Vine weevil will tend to feed on the leaves of plants and leaving visible notches on the leaf edges.

Once you have mixed your nematodes with water, to create your working solution, it can be watered into plant pots, containers, raised beds, flower beds, and borders.

Product Specification

We strongly recommend applying, this natural treatment, to your infected areas between the months of January to May and August to October when the soil temperature is over 10oC. Outside of this period, the treatment will possibly have little effective due to the lower temperature killing off the nematodes.

• Storage of Nematodes
As the nematodes are supplied live, it is preferable to use them as soon as possible, ideally when they arrive but If this is not possible unopened containers can be safely stored in a fridge (at or around 4oC), then use as soon as you can. Do not allow the contents to freeze. You should not store opened packets or mixed solutions.

• Required Conditions
These nematodes are designed for areas that are showing signs of infestation. The nematode working solution should be watered into the soil around the infected plants. The soil should be moist, when applying, and kept moist for two weeks after application as this helps the nematodes move within the soil. The solution should not be applied during hours of bright sunshine as the nematodes are UV sensitive. We recommend applying during the early morning or late evening when the UV levels are lower, the temperature will have reduced, and the humidity level will be better suited.

• Usage Instructions (based upon the 100m2 pack)

o Empty contents of the sachet into a bucket containing 5 litres of water and mix. Continue mixing until the solution is smooth and there aren’t any lumps. You have now made your nematode concentrate.
o Pour 0.5 litres of the nematode concentrate into a watering can, add 7.5 litres of water, and stir.
o Water the diluted nematode solution into the lawn with each 8 litres covering an area of 10m2. Pour evenly across the area.
o The treated area should be kept moist for 2 weeks after application.

• Next Steps
Keep the treated area moist for 2 weeks after application.
Monitor your plants for signs of continued activity and repeat the treatment if necessary.

FAQs

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE TREATMENT TO WORK AS I NEED TO LAY NEW TURF?
The nematodes do not stay in the grass but enter the soil therefore the relaying of turf, or seeding an area, should not be an issue for your nematodes, but it may be better to leave any work for a few days after treatment to give the nematodes time to get deeper in the soil.

IS IT EASY TO APPLY YOUR NEMATODES?
The nematodes are supplied in a powder and this just needs to be mixed with water, and this solution is ready to use once you have removed any lumps. As you will be applying the Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes to ground level surfaces, we recommend using a watering can and with a larger rose to minimise the potential of blockages.

WHEN SHOULD I APPLY THE VINE WEEVIL NEMATODES?
There are two periods during the year when applying the nematodes is most suitable; the first is January to May, the second August to October when the soil temperature is 10oC or above. For orders placed during the colder months, the packs will contain nematodes that are more suited to these temperatures.

If treating indoor plants then treatments can be made all year.

CAN I STORE THE NEMATODES?
You should use the nematodes as soon as possible and unopened packets can be safely stored in a fridge until you are able to use them.
