Nematodes - Natural Pest Control for Lawns & Gardens

Nematodes - Natural Pest Control for Lawns & Gardens

If your lawn is developing yellow patches, feels spongy underfoot, or is being torn apart by birds and foxes, there’s a good chance that underground pests are the problem. Fortunately, we offer a natural, and highly effective solution: nematodes.

Our nematode range offers a safe, eco-friendly way to tackle some of the UK’s most common lawn pests without using harsh chemicals.

What Are Nematodes?

Nematodes are microscopic, naturally occurring organisms that live in soil. Certain beneficial species actively hunt and kill garden pests while remaining completely safe for children, pets, birds, pollinating insects, your lawn, and plants.

Once applied, the nematodes move through moist soil, locate the target pest, and enter its body through natural openings. They then release naturally occurring bacteria that stop the pest feeding and quickly eliminate the infestation.

Because they target specific pests, they’re one of the most environmentally friendly and non-invasive pest control methods available. That’s why we offer such a wide range and promote them so passionately.

Why Gardeners Choose Nematodes

We can tell that more gardeners are switching to biological lawn treatments constantly, and for good reason. They work naturally with your soil ecosystem, avoid pesticides, are safe around families and pets, and reduce long-term reinfestations, all whilst restoring your lawn’s health and keeping the beneficial insects that your lawn needs.

Many traditional chemical lawn insecticides have been restricted or removed in the UK, making nematodes one of the most effective and reliable alternatives.

Most Common Lawn Problems that Nematodes Solve:

-     Chafer Grubs

Chafer grubs are the larvae of chafer beetles and are one of the UK’s most destructive lawn pests. They feed on grass roots beneath the surface, causing:

  • Yellow or brown patches
  • Weak turf that lifts easily
  • Increased bird and animal digging
  • Bare, damaged lawns

The damage is often made worse by birds, foxes, and badgers digging up the lawn to eat the grubs.

Our Chafer Grub Nematodes target the larvae directly and are most effective from July to September while the grubs are young and close to the surface.

·    Leatherjackets

Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies (commonly known as daddy long legs). They feed on grass roots throughout autumn and winter, leading to:

  • Thinning grass
  • Weak root systems
  • Patchy lawns
  • Turf that peels back easily

You may also notice birds pecking heavily at your lawn as they search for the larvae.

Leatherjacket nematodes provide a natural solution that attacks the larvae underground before severe lawn damage develops.

Signs You May Need Nematodes

You could have a lawn pest problem if you notice:

  • Yellowing or dying patches of grass
  • Birds constantly pecking or digging
  • Foxes or badgers damaging turf overnight
  • Grass lifting like a carpet
  • Increased lawn damage after rain
  • Visible grubs beneath the turf

Many gardeners initially mistake these symptoms for drought stress or fungal disease, but root-feeding larvae are often the real cause.

Types of Nematodes in Our Range

Different pests require different species of nematodes. That’s why choosing the correct treatment matters. We have a wide range of nematodes to cover all problems, including:

·       Viburnum Beetles

·       Asparagus Beetles

·       Chafer Grubs

·       Plum Fruit Moths

·       Codling Moths

·       Box Tree Caterpillars

·       General Caterpillars

·       Vine Weevils

·       Cutworm

·       Leather Jacket (Daddy long legs)

·       Fungus Fly

·       Carrot Root Fly

Each nematode species is specially selected to target a particular pest lifecycle for maximum effectiveness.

How to Apply Nematodes

Applying nematodes is straightforward, but timing and soil conditions are important.

1.      Water the Lawn

The soil should be moist before application.

2.      Mix with Water

Nematodes are supplied in a concentrated formulation and mixed with water according to the pack instructions.

3.      Apply Evenly

Use a watering can, hose-end applicator, or sprayer to distribute the solution evenly across the affected area.

4.      Water Again

Lightly water the lawn after application to help wash the nematodes into the soil.

5.      Keep Soil Moist

Keep the treated area damp for at least 1–2 weeks to allow the nematodes to remain active.

For best results:

  • Apply during cooler parts of the day
  • Avoid strong sunlight
  • Treat when soil temperatures are warm enough (generally above 10–12°C)

When Should You Use Nematodes?

Timing is critical because nematodes work best when pests are young and near the soil surface.

Each type of nematodes has it’s own ideal application time - applying too early or too late can reduce effectiveness because pests move deeper into the soil or become harder to control.

A Safe, Natural Way to Protect Your Lawn

Healthy lawns start below the surface. By targeting pests naturally, nematodes help restore strong roots, greener grass, and a healthier garden ecosystem without relying on harsh chemicals.

Whether you’re dealing with chafer grubs, leatherjackets, or unexplained lawn damage, the right nematode treatment can make a huge difference.
